The Best of the Best:

Batman: Noel by Lee Bermejo
Recommended for
: Batman fans who don’t mind that pussy Superman too much.

Just in time for Christmas, Batman is visited by three spirits to change his grumpus attitude. Featuring Catwoman, Superman, and the Joker, this remake of A Christmas Carol has the most stunning artwork I have ever seen in any other graphic novel.

Annual Reading/Review List: 2010

2 Jan

I completed a grand total of 78 books (22 fiction novels, 2 short story anthologies, 5 non fiction novels, 23 young adult novels, 25 graphic novels, and 1 children’s book).

The Best of the Best:

Clockwork Angel: The Infernal Devices Book 1 by Cassandra Clare
Recommended For
: Readers who enjoy their paranormal YA with a Victorian feel to them.

A prequel to her adrenaline driven “Mortal Instruments Series”, Cassandra Clare’s “Clockwork Angel” is the first of a new series featuring the Shadowhunters, descendants of angels in charge of keeping Mundanes safe from evil Downworlders such as warlocks and vampires. This new series, set in Victorian London has a steampunk feel to it, and is full of clockwork creatures both good and evil. This first novel will have you wishing to enter Tessa’s world and stay there for as long as possible. This book was truly hard to put down, and even harder to let it end.

Annual Reading/Review List: 2009

21 Nov

I completed a grand total of 54 books (10 fiction novels, 4 non fiction novels, 9 young adult novels, 28 graphic novels, and 3 poems/plays).

The Best of the Best:

Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament by S.G. Browne
Recommended For
: Anyone with a strong stomach who can handle an amazingly realistic zombie romance novel.

To be honest, I bought this book for the cover alone, which I am known to do. But I found within its pages a believable story with an amazing critique on “the other” in our society, albeit through the undead. The story itself was engaging, interesting, and to put it bluntly, amazing. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is a fan of zombie literature.

21 Nov

I completed a grand total of 50 books (25 fiction novels, 1 short story anthology, 1 non fiction novel, 8 young adult novels, 10 graphic novels, and 5 poems/plays).

The Best of the Best:

Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
Recommended For: Fans of Neil Gaiman and anyone who loves mythological retellings.

So I suppose I’m a Neil Gaiman fangirl, but I really enjoyed this strange novel. It focuses on the son of the spider God Anansi and his magical brother. It’s a perfect road trip/beach read and the story kept me hooked from beginning to end. The intertwining of current stories and short stories dealing with African mythology was definitely a plus. Overall, it’s funny, quirky, but has the wonderful intelligent and thoughtfulness that Neil Gaiman puts in each and every one of his novels.

“Alice in Wonderland” Collection

21 Nov

“Echoes fade and memories die: / Autumn frosts have slain July. / Still she haunts me, phantomwise, / Alice moving under skies / Never seen by waking eyes…”

I have loved “Alice in Wonderland” since I was five. It has since then been my favourite Disney movie of all time (sans “Nightmare Before Christmas” which I saw when I was six and also still love, but not nearly as deeply). Am I pissed off that Hot Topic stole my childhood and distorted it into something cool and trendy? Of course I fucking am! But I can’t be completely bitter, because I’ve gotten some sweet “Alice” merchandise out of it all. Anyways, I read both books some time in High School and that was the end of it all for me. I was even more hooked, and have been ever since (as evidenced by my Wonderland tattoos and my obsessive compulsive need to collect all things Alice).

And this is precisely what this post is dedicated to, my love of a little girl named Alice, the most beloved, lasting, and transcendent of all of Disney’s characters and more importantly, the legacy of Lewis Carroll.

My Alice themed shelf! Complete with journal, stickers, hand made shoes by the amazing Cassie-wa, serving dish, view master slides, American McGee’s Alice figurines, lipstick, nailpolish, Lolita-esque heart shaped sunglasses, and an Alice photo frame full of some beaming Exclusives.
